Singer, songwriter and rapper Jake Miller dropped his new album Silver Lining today. Miller, who debuted with a pop-rap style influenced by John Mayer as much as Macklemore, emerged in 2011 with his self-released debut EP, Summer Session. Since then, he’s released multiple EPs and LPs. Silver Lining is his first release since becoming an independent artist and he’s declaring it to be his biggest album yet.
With 14 tracks, Silver Lining is hip-hop and pop gold that is full of electric beats, acoustic heart, catchy hooks and a voice as cute as his looks (I couldn’t leave that out. He’s 25 years old and any girl’s dream.) The new album will have you swooning — and not just because he’s absolutely adorable — the lyrics, melodies and vocals are crafted mindfully and marvelously. It’s evident he took the time to create songs that are coherent to the album as a whole.
Impressively, most of the songs on the album are self-written and self-produced. Silver Lining was released on Miller’s self-titled label Jake Miller Music Inc. / EMPIRE and is available on streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. Or, buy it and support independent artists!! (It debuted at number two on the Pop iTunes charts and number 11 on the regular iTunes charts! GO JAKE!).
Miller shared this on Instagram about his new album:
“This album is about letting go of past experiences and bad energy and focusing on the road ahead. Understanding that something positive always comes out of something negative. I hope you love this album as much as I do.”
His quick blurb on the album sums up the 14 songs concisely. The album revolves around themes dealing with love, heartbreak, youth and new beginnings. Its sound would be fun to experience and hear live. Good thing he’s hitting the road to tour (more on that below).
One of my favorite aspects of his new album is the artwork. Each song has its own individual image that is stunning. I love the hues of the colors, the stories they tell and way they represent the songs.
Songs I’m digging include “Permanent,” “The Girl That’s Underneath (feat. Jabbar Hakeem)” and “Paris and New York.” I do wish there was a bit more rapping on the album from Miller, but overall, there are some really good ones and I applaud its consistent sound.
